Study Shows Anxiety And Depression Runs Rampant Among Metal Fans
High Anxiety (album) (Photo credit: Wikipedia) |
Ugh, I'm not even going to write a solid lead for this article- I'm too sad being brutal. So usually when you think metal head, you think things like "way pissed off" and "super brutal," but depressed and anxious? That's what the studies are saying! According to the article published in the Pacific Standard Magazine- An analysis ...

The Physics of Mosh Pits at Heavy Metal Concerts
The Physics of Mosh Pits at Heavy Metal Concerts (Explained by Cornell Grad Students):
Speaking at the American Physical Society last month, Matthew Bierbaum, a Cornell grad student, presented a talk called “Collective Motion at Heavy Metal Concerts,” where he made the case that physics is everywhere, even in a mosh pit at a heavy metal show. Along with three other Cornell researchers, Bierbaum has analyzed and modeled the collective motions of moshers in various YouTube concert videos (like the one below) and discovered that “dancers collide with each other randomly and at a distribution of speeds that resembles particles in a two-dimensional gas,” writes Lauren Wolfe in Chemical & Engineering News.

Kurt Cobain’s Isolated Vocal Track From ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit,’ 1991
Kurt Cobain’s Isolated Vocal Track From ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit,’ 1991:
In 1991, Nirvana’s Nevermind album exploded into mainstream popular culture like–as one writer describes it– “a grenade detonating in your car radio.” The album, and the Seattle-based grunge rock movement it emerged from, was like a booster shot of 70s punk attitude into heavy metal, sweeping away the hedonism and vanity of 80s bands like Quiet Riot and Mötley Crüe. The song that epitomized the new attitude, for many, was the opening track of Nevermind, “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” with its explosive expression of youthful alienation:

Deftones Statement On Chi Cheng: “He Will Always Be Here Because Of Love”:
Deftones have posted a moving statement on the tragic passing of bassist Chi Cheng, who left us on Sunday morning after a lengthy and brave battle for life after being involved in a serious car accident in 2008.
“There are so many things I can say, and yet at this moment, none of it matters or compares to the loss everyone feels,” says guitarist Stephen Carter. “There will be a hole in our lives where Chi once was. But that will be filled everyday with all of our love and memories we all have in our heart. He will always be here because of love. It’s time we all give our love and best, and do our best to love. Especially ourselves, Chi would want that for everyone. All our healing will begin with love. I love you Chi.
“Stephen, for Deftones.”

"My Chemical Romance – RIP?
Blogs Of War: My Chemical Romance – RIP?:
The recent news that My Chemical Romance are calling it quits after over a decade together was met with hysterical dismay by their biggest fans and vitriolic jubilation by their fiercest critics. But should we really be rejoicing in the demise of a band that undeniably changed the landscape of heavy music – and arguably for the better? Tom Doyle investigates…
So then, My Chemical Romance have announced their decision to split some 12 years after lead singer and mischief-maker-in-chief Gerard Way formed the band in the wake of the September 11th attacks. Now that the dust has had a chance to settle, what better time to have a look at why MCR were such an important band in the story of the last decade of rock music and why metal fans, whether you like the music they produced or not, ought to care about the New Jersey quintet?
Firstly, they were a band with a firm grasp on the concept of spectacle. Their penchant for military regalia owed more than a little to Iron Maiden and the pomp and circumstance they brought to their at times knockabout punk gave it a widescreen appeal that took them to stadia across the globe – they weren’t nicknamed “Queen Day” for no reason. This is why Metal Hammer were the first mag in the UK to put them on our cover; because we could see what everyone would eventually see, that they were turning what they had into something greater than the sum of its parts.
Another crucial facet of MCR’s enduring charm was the role they fulfilled for their fans throughout their career. Every now and then a genuinely tribalising band come along; in the world of metal for the last 15+ years it has been Slipknot, in the world of pop-punk and ‘emo’ (or whatever you want to call it) it was MCR. These bands induce something in their fans beyond the regular adoration. To call one of these bands your own feels defining and all-consumingly powerful. Maggots and The MCRmy – not so dissimilar.
That tribalism can be a powerful force for self-definition, but be under no illusions, it is quality that is ultimately the most important thing, regardless of what specific creed of rock music the band in question are from. Hammer straddles many of those creeds; from power metal to powerviolence and beyond, it is only right that we take an embracing rather than exclusive stance.
MCR were a genuinely vital band and capable on their day of winning over fans from all corners of our diverse family. As a lover of music (as each one of you reading this surely is), it is important not to get bogged down in the seemingly ever more divided lines of sub-genre warfare. That way, dogma lies. Put it this way: apples are lovely, but you wouldn’t want to eat them all the time, would you? There’s nothing wrong with trying an orange every once in a while.
Maybe even more important than all of this, though, is the band’s relationship with the ‘mainstream press’. When vile hate rag The Daily Mail set its sights on tarring Chem’s fans as a cult of self-harming devil worshippers, it was no different to Christians Against Slipknot or Tipper Gore having a pop at Dee Snider. What was heartening to see was a group of fans, some very young, prepared to stand up for themselves and what they believed in – the right to listen to whatever they wanted to and express themselves however they see fit.
MCR’s penchant for military-inspired garb and sense of showmanship in the ‘Black Parade’ era drew comparisons to everyone from Queen to Marilyn Manson
They marched and they caused a fuss and exposed the Mail as the reactionary prats that they are – “Long live The Black Parade, we’ll listen to what we fucking want”. MCR fans weren’t prepared to take any shit, and for that we should all salute them. That’s what rock music is all about; an outsider culture that we should all be ready to stand up for and defend. My Chemical Romance mobilised this intense feeling of belonging in a new generation of fans, and for that alone they should be applauded.
Do you agree with Tom’s thoughts? Are MCR are band that we, as rock fans, should embrace? Head over to our Facebook page and let us know what you think.

Killswitch Engage Interview:
After the exit of longtime vocalist Howard Jones, the path of Killswitch Engage seemed unclear. They went back to their roots, bringing back Jesse Leach, who left the band a decade ago. I chatted with Leach about how the reunion came about, the recording of the new album, his thoughts on singing Jones' songs, the future of Times Of Grace and other topics.

Dave Lombardo Not Focusing On Slayer Any More
Dave Lombardo Not Focusing On Slayer Any More:
Dave Lombardo hasn’t given up hope of returning to Slayer – but he’s not hanging about to see if it happens.
The drummer was suddenly dropped ahead of the band’s Australian tour last month. Bandmate Kerry King said he made the decision at the last minute following a contractual dispute, but added that Tom Araya had been concerned about the situation for some time.
He was replaced by Jon Dette, who played with the thrash giants for a stint in the 90s.
Now Rock Overdose reports details of an upcoming interview in which Lombardo explains “He would like to be with Slayer, he would like to be in the band, but at the moment he doesn’t know how things will evolve, so all he can do is wait and see.”
As a result he regards side project Philm as his “main band” and he’s also reactivating former outfit Grip Inc, with new frontman Casey Chaos of Amen.
Slayer continue to operate with Gary Holt of Exodus standing in for spider-bite victim Jeff Hanneman, with talk recently moving towards the possibility of the change of guitarist becoming permanent.

Deftones bassist Chi Cheng has died at the age of 42, his family has confirmed.
He’d been in a semi-comatose state since a traffic accident in 2008, but had shown signs of improvement in recent months.
Cheng’s mum Jeanne – who was instrumental in setting up oneloveforchi.com – says: “He was taken to the emergency room at 3am today. His heart just suddenly stopped. He left this world with me singing songs he liked in his ear.
“He fought the good fight. You stood by him sending love daily. He knew that he was very loved and never alone.
“Your love and heart and devotion to Chi was unconditional and amazing. I know that you will always remember him as a giant of a man on stage with a heart for every one of you.

Megadeth: ‘Super Collider’ Artwork Unveiled
Megadeth: ‘Super Collider’ Artwork Unveiled:
Megadeth’s new opus finally has a cover!
Super Collider will be released this June via Dave Mustaine‘s new label, Tradecraft.
“It was a real thrill for us to learn there was an opportunity to join Universal,” said Mustaine during a break in the sessions. “It seems like every time you see a great band or music video, it comes from a Universal label. Being with Universal is by far the most exciting and prestigious home for Megadeth ever! We are electrified with what the future holds and the possibilities such a powerhouse like Universal will bring for us all. We have worked with some great people over the years, and it is amazing to see so many of them on the Universal team for our new record, Super Collider. If Megadeth being here isn’t satiating enough, having Tradecraft as my own label is going to be really amazing for metal bands around the world.”
Dave‘s crew will play the following venues:
Jun 3 Newcastle Academy
Jun 4 Glasgow Cademy
Jun 5 Manchester Academy
Jun 6 London Brixton Academy
